Yesterday I went outside to check for eggs and Claire followed me. As we walked up to the coop, I could hear the familiar shuddering noise that is Plumpy, our Rhode Island Red trying to lay an egg. Chicken update: all is well and good with the chickens this week. We got 12 eggs total, 5 from Scratch, 4 green from the "Ameraucana", 2 from Little Red and 1 brown from the other "Ameraucana". Not bad! I'm surprised at how hard their shells and inner membranes are compared with store-bought eggs and because they're free range and eat lots of greens, the yolks are nearly orange. We lost one of our Rhode Island Red hens at the end of the year. You can read all about it here, if you'd like. It was sad, especially because we had to put her down. But we went into this chicken project knowing that the life span of a chicken is not long, so we were able to move ahead. 88 pounds!the vet wants him to lose 8-10 pounds or put him on a prescription diet. I figure cutting out table scraps will do the trick, plus more walks. And Josh fenced off a section of the backyard where we can throw scraps for the chickens that Buddy can't get to. I'm sure at least 5 pounds of his weight is from the chicken bones incident! I admit that I have a flair for the dramatic, that I thrive during times of crisis and usually fast-forward to the worst case scenario. BUT....seriously? This is as bad as I've ever seen as far as wildfires go. As of the time of this post there are no fires within a 45 mile radius of us (yes Josh, 45, not 50, I stand corrected) but even here, the sky is glowing orange from all the soot and ash.
